Program for Genetic Advancement Canada

PGAC is Select Sires Canada Inc.’s young sire program in Canada. Like its subsidiary in the United States, the PGAC samples young sires that have built-in qualities to be breed leaders as a result of being the products of the most highly-regarded sires in A.I and out of the most elite cows in each breed. PGAC sires are randomly sampled, coast-to-coast, to ensure they are sampled on a cross section of management systems in various geographic locations. The majority of Select Sires’s current proven line-up started their career as a PGA young sire. These sires include: BELL, MARS TONY, CHIEF MARK, BLACKSTAR, ELTON, HIGHLIGHT, MATHIE, INTEGRITY, DURHAM, and HI METRO.

Thousands of producers across the continent cooperate with Select Sires to sample and evaluate 380 new young sires from the six main dairy breeds each year. Both our customers and Select Sires Canada Inc. benefit from participation in the PGAC; along with the financial benefits, our customers will be among the first to milk daughters of the newest great sires. It is a fact that the average young sire daughter outperforms many of the daughters of proven sires available at the time of sampling.

FINANCIAL BENEFITS

PGAC semen is available at a nominal charge of $5.00 a unit, to dairy producers who meet or exceed our expectations for participation in the program.

A "PGAC Cow Certificate" is issued for each of the first 100 PGAC daughters whose official production record and classification are used in published sire summaries. For the first 50 of these daughters, based on calving date, the cow certificate is $ 100.00 each. These first 50 daughters need to be in the bull’s first 3 sire summaries. For the second 50 of these daughters, the cow certificate is $ 50.00 each. These second 50 daughters need to be within the Bulls first 6 sire summaries. The "PGAC Cow Certificate" is issued to the dairy producer’s as a certificate to be used for future purchases of Select Sires Semen.

Two "PGAC Thank You" discount certificates are issued for each of the first 100 PGAC daughters whose official production and classification are used in published sire summaries. Each "PGAC Thank You" discount certificate entitles the recipient to receive a 50% discount off the regular retail price ($40.00 maximum) of one unit of semen from Select Sires Canada Inc. proven sires available at that time.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

Your herd must be enrolled in an official milk-recording program that provides usable records for official sire summaries.
You must have an accurate and effective animal identification program in use in your herd to ensure proper identification of all PGAC offspring.
You must use PGAC semen randomly in your herd to ensure proper sampling. Typical randomization plans used are: a) all first repeat services, b) all first calf heifers, c) the next available cows in heat after the PGAC semen is received.
You must use PGAC semen within 90 days after it’s received to facilitate early sampling results.
